When we decided to go to a professional soccer match in Senegal, we had no idea it would be one of the most memorable and community-driven experiences of our trip. The game itself was in their highest division, with one of the stronger teams facing a lower-ranked opponent. As we walked into the stadium and made our way to the stands, we immediately noticed one section that was relatively calm and another that was absolutely electric. The hype section reminded me of a school’s Sixth Man student section, except much, much rowdier.
At first, we sat in the quieter section, taking in the atmosphere. But then, a man dressed in all-white noticed that we were foreigners. Without hesitation, he grabbed us and spread us throughout the hype section, making sure we felt welcomed, accepted, and comfortable. Some of us ended up dancing with the crowd for the entire game, swept up in the energy and passion of the fans. It was a reminder of how sports, like community, can bring people together in ways that transcend language and background.
What made this experience even more meaningful was how the sports club itself was deeply connected to education. Their goal was not just to promote soccer but also to uplift students and schools in the area. Because of this connection, Mr. Alter was able to meet one of the administrators at a local school, and that single interaction ended up reshaping the rest of our trip.
On Monday, we found ourselves visiting a Senegalese private school in action and later a university—an opportunity we wouldn’t have had without the relationships formed at the game. The team even invited us to get merchandise, attend another match, and possibly play against some of their super fans in a soccer match.
And it didn’t stop there. Even in smaller moments, community and connection found their way into our experiences. A few of us were walking along the beach, just looking for snacks, when a man who owned a painting shop approached us. Even after realizing we weren’t interested in his paintings, he still led us to a corner store, just out of kindness.
Looking back, it’s wild to think that all of this stemmed from Maya, Blake, and Anthony wanting to see a soccer game. It’s proof that even the smallest choices can lead to the most unexpected and meaningful connections. This trip has shown us that community is not just about where you are, it’s about the people you meet, the moments you share, and the bonds that continue to shape your experiences long after they happen.
