We started the day by driving to Rishikesh, the city where the Beatles wrote The White Album. This was probably the strangest city I have ever visited. Rishikesh wasn’t chaotic like New Delhi, but it was a strange mix of Indian and western cultures, all in one small city. This was the first place in India where we saw a lot of white people, and heard several different languages other than just Hindi and English. Rishikesh made me ask, are there any other places in India like this? And how do the region’s citizens think about the large foreign population in Rishikesh?
Once we left Rishikesh, we began a seven-hour bus ride into the mountains. This was probably the most beautiful ride I have ever been on. We passed through mountain roads and saw huge cliff sides with snow capped mountains in the distance. This trip so far has been really amazing. When I was younger I never would have thought I would be in the Himalayan mountains, or in a small village in northern India. When I go back to the States, I think Agora and that mountain drive will always be in my mind.
